After leaving behind their successful career at Epic, The Nolans decided to release a non stop party mega mix on LP, produced by Richard Myhill.
By now, the line up consisted of Anne, Maureen, Coleen and Bernie. Linda had left the act to follow a solo career on TV, after the demise of the ‘Dressed To Kill’ single.
‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ features a non stop mix of classic hits, a modern day ‘20 Giant Hits’ as it were, including songs of the 1980’s by the likes of Michael Jackson, Madonna, Culture Club, Cyndi Lauper and Bonnie Tyler.
Though most tracks are played in constant sequence, the album does feature a few full length songs, including ‘In Your Eyes’ (Anne) and ‘Wherever I Lay My Hat’ (Coleen). The vocals were very strong, featuring belting performances notably from Bernie (‘Beat It’) and a soft delicate vocal from Coleen. Anne (‘In Your Eyes’) and Maureen (‘Do You Really Want To Hurt Me’) delivered superb vocals also.
Collaborates include Charlie Morgan (drums), who had success working with Kate Bush and Elton John; Judd Lander, who actually played harmonica on the original ‘Karam Chameleon’ recording for Culture Club.
The album was promoted well, with regular television performances and TV ads. ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ peaked at #39 in the UK and remained in the charts for 8 weeks.
The album was released on the now defunct label, Towerbell Records, foundered by singer Natasha England and her then husband. There were no singles lifted from LP, although ‘In Your Eyes’ backed the stand alone single ‘Goodbye, Nothin’ To Say’, also released on Towerbell.
‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ is all about... Having fun! The girls enjoyed recording the album, that would become their last charting in the UK.
