The Nolans, still a four consisting of Bernie, Anne, Coleen and Maureen, would release their ‘Tenderly’ album in 1986.
Regarded by many as their finest work, the girls show off their stunning vocals an harmonies, on this much softer album, unlike anything they had released prior. ‘Tendery’ includes songs special to the girls themselves, including tracks composed by songwriting team Rodgers/Hart (‘My Funny Valentine’ and ‘Bewitched’) who were famous for their stage and musical productions in during the 1920’s and 1930’s onwards. Other notable songs include ‘Tenderly’, made famous by Rosemary Clooney (1952), composed by Walter Lloyd Gross and Jack Lawrence; ‘The Folks Who Live On The Hill’ co written by Hammerstein II; ‘When I Fall In Love’ originally a hit for Doris Day, written by Victor Young and Edward Heyman; ‘As Time Goes By’, a song written for the 1931 Broadway music ‘Everybody’s Welcome’.
With four songs each, out of all, Anne most enjoyed recording this album. Her voice was more suited to this style of music, rather than the upbeat disco tunes the girls had become famous for. Anne would take lead vocals on ‘The Folks Who Live On The Hill’, opening the album, ‘I Get Along Without You’, ‘As Time Goes By’ and the a cappella version of ‘Everytime we Say Goodbye’. Coleens, soft, tender and Innocent voice would deliver tracks like ‘My Funny Valentine’, ‘Autumn Leave’ ‘When I Fall In Love’ and ‘Try A Little Tenderness’ superbly. Bernie would give stunning lead on ‘’Once In A While’, ‘In The Wee Small Hours’, ‘All The Way’ and ‘Bewitched’, while Maureen gave one of her finest vocal performances on ‘Here’s That Rainy Day’, ‘Embraceable You’, ‘Tenderly’ and ‘Someone To Watch Over You’.
The album includes two songs performed in a cappella, ‘When I Fall In Love’ and the closing track ‘Everytime We Say Goodbye’.
‘Tenderly’ failed to chart in the UK, and was released to coincide with the girls tour of Britain, which also proved to fail miserably. Spartan Records are probably to blame, due to the lack of promotion. One single was issued, a non album track, ‘Let’s Spend The Night Together’, ‘ backed with ‘When I Fall In Love’. The single also failed to chart.
Overall, ‘Tenderly’ is a beautiful album, with perfect harmonies and excellent vocal performances. If the promotion had been right, the girls could have quite possibly scored a rightful hit with the record.
